Happy New Year!

8/8/2016

Welcome to another new session here in the maths department.

Here's a couple of questions to ask yourself as we get started:

What course am I on this year?
What do I hope to achieve from it?
Why do I want to do well in maths?

How can I make sure I get there?

Knowing where you are headed and how you plan to get there is half the battle!  If you're not sure, then find time to ask us here in the department.

All S4 pupils have been studying their National courses since the timetable changed in June.  The first unit assessment will be close now - please check planners regularly to see when they are being scheduled.

Pupils all have a Self Evaluation booklet to help them to identify their strengths and areas for improvement.  They should be updating these regularly in class so that they can use their revision and homework time well.  There are revision and study resources for all levels in the Links page.

All current third year pupils have been given a letter today advising what course they will continue to study into fourth year.  The levels have been agreed based upon the pupil's own choice, the teacher's professional judgement and the results of ongoing and formal assessment.  There is a return slip on the bottom of each letter.  Please get in touch if you need any clarification or want to discuss the levels further.

Maths or Lifeskills?

Are you struggling to make a decision between studying for N5 Mathematics or N5 Lifeskills Mathematics next year?  Check out our top tips below:

Where are you heading?
Check what sort of mathematical skills are required for your chosen path.  Whether it is further education or employment, some maths skills will be needed. But they don't all need trigonometry and algebraic fractions!  Do your reseach online or speak to careers staff for further guidance.

What sort of maths are you good at?
If you enjoy algebraic reasoning and problem solving then Mathematics is the route for you.  If you prefer applying skills to familiar context and real life scenrios then choose Lifeskills.

Do you want to do Higher?
Only Higher Mathematics is available.  There is no Higher Lifeskills Mathematics course.

What does the exam look like?
Both courses have 3 units and an external exam in May.  Previous exam papers and further information about the courses are available on the SQA website - Mathematics and Lifeskills

Still stuck?  Get in touch.
